TEXACO SUCCESS BRINGS JAPAN INVITATION TO CLARE STUDENT

DUBLIN, IRELAND 17 June 2008 – Clare student Lucy Carragher is to visit Japan where her prizewinning entry in this year’s 54th Texaco Children’s Art Competition will feature in an exhibition in Tokyo hosted by Japan’s International Foundation for Arts and Culture.

Accompanied by her mother Jane, Lucy will travel to Tokyo to attend the opening of the exhibition which takes place from 29 July – 2 August at the prestigious Ueno Royal Museum in Tokyo.

A 17-year old pupil at St. Anne's Community College, Killaloe, Lucy hit the headlines recently when her colourful painting entitled 'Self Portrait' took the €2,000 top prize in the Texaco competition along with the €1,500 UTV/ Texaco Young Artist Commission.

The purpose behind the International Foundation for Arts and Culture is to provide an international showcase for young people to engage in their artistic exploration of the world and to nurture a broader understanding of the experiences and events that impact on the younger generation across different cultures. Last year, some 5,000 students from Japan, Australia, Egypt, Cambodia and China submitted works to the festival.

The invitation to Lucy and her mother includes return air tickets, hotel accommodation and meals, a one day guided tour of Tokyo and the services of a translator for the duration of their stay. It was sent to her via the Irish Embassy in Japan and came as a direct result of her success in winning the top Texaco prize.

Her painting will be exhibited alongside some 300 other art works by students from Japan and elsewhere. Included in these will be nine other winning paintings from the Texaco competition, including one by another Clare student, Cillian Boyd, whose entries featured prominently amongst the prizewinners in previous years.
